Visiting Mostar in May
# Mostar in May: Worth the Trip?
May is honestly one of the better times to show up in Mostar, and I say that as someone who’s also been there in August when it felt like standing inside a pizza oven surrounded by four hundred other sweaty tourists.
The weather in May sits in that genuinely pleasant middle ground – warm enough that you’re comfortable wandering around in a t-shirt during the day, cool enough that evenings call for a light jacket. You’ll get some rain, occasionally more than you’d like, but nothing that should derail your trip. The Neretva River runs a stunning turquoise-green colour partly because of snowmelt this time of year, which makes the whole scene around Stari Most look almost unrealistically beautiful.
Crowds are building but haven’t hit the summer wall yet. You can actually walk across the old bridge without stopping every three steps for someone’s selfie. The restaurants along the riverbank have space. You can linger. This matters more than people realise until they turn up in July and discover Mostar has somehow become a theme park version of itself.
Everything is open by May. The dive shows off the bridge are happening, the craft shops are running, restaurants are fully staffed. Early spring can be hit or miss with some places still deciding if the season has started – May has no such problem.
Who should come in May? Honestly, most people. Couples, solo travellers, anyone who wants the postcard experience without feeling processed through a tourist machine. It’s also good for people who find extreme heat miserable – July temperatures can genuinely make sightseeing unpleasant here.
Any hesitation? If you’re hoping for that completely empty, off-season atmosphere, it’s already gone by May. This is shoulder season tipping toward high season, not a hidden secret.
**Practical tip:** Stay at least one night rather than doing a day trip from Dubrovnik or Split. Mostar after the day-trippers leave becomes a completely different, much quieter place – and that evening light on the bridge is the whole point.
