Where to Stay in Neum

Where to Stay in Neum

Neum is Bosnia and Herzegovina’s only coastal town, a sliver of Adriatic shoreline that most travelers stumble upon rather than plan for. It’s small, it’s unpretentious, and if you stay in the right spot, it’s genuinely good value compared to the Croatian resorts sandwiching it on either side.

The best area to base yourself is the central promenade strip running along the main beach. Staying here puts you within walking distance of the water, the restaurants, and the handful of shops without needing any transport. Guesthouses and small family-run apartments dominate this zone, and most offer clean, basic rooms at prices that feel almost embarrassingly low compared to Dubrovnik just an hour away. Look for sobe signs, which indicate private rooms for rent, as these consistently beat hotel pricing while offering more space and often a kitchen.

The hillside above the town center is worth considering if you want slightly quieter surroundings and don’t mind a ten to fifteen minute walk down to the beach. Apartments here tend to be larger, better ventilated in summer heat, and noticeably cheaper. The tradeoff is carrying groceries uphill, which gets old fast.

Avoid the edges of town where accommodation clusters near the main road rather than the coast. You lose the sea breeze, you gain traffic noise, and there’s no meaningful price advantage to justify it.

For genuinely budget travel, booking directly with apartment owners rather than through platforms saves you ten to twenty percent. Knock on doors with sobe signs or ask locals. This works better here than almost anywhere else in the region because digital adoption among older hosts remains low and they genuinely prefer cash arrangements.

The single most common booking mistake is assuming one night is enough. Travelers book Neum as a transit stop between Croatian cities and then wish they had stayed longer. The town is quiet enough that two nights feels right, giving you one full unhurried day without the pressure of an early checkout. Book the second night before you arrive rather than scrambling on the ground.
