# Neum in April: The Quiet Before Everything Kicks Off

Neum is Bosnia and Herzegovina’s only sliver of coastline, a tiny wedge of Adriatic sandwiched between Croatian territory on both sides. It’s genuinely odd and genuinely charming, and April sits in that interesting middle ground where you can’t quite predict what you’re going to get.

**The weather is a gamble.** April on this stretch of the Adriatic can be genuinely lovely — mild temperatures around 15-18°C, clear skies, the sea looking impossibly blue without a crowd in sight. It can also be grey, rainy, and a bit bleak. The Dinaric Alps to the north create unpredictable conditions, and you might get three warm days followed by two days of steady rain. Pack layers and don’t build your whole trip around lying on the beach, because the water is still cold and swimming is really only for the committed or slightly unhinged.

**Crowds are basically nonexistent.** This is either a feature or a bug depending on your personality. The summer rush that clogs the coastal road and fills every terrace hasn’t arrived yet. You can walk the shoreline in genuine peace and actually look at things.

**What’s open is patchy.** Some restaurants and small hotels operate year-round because locals need them, but plenty of seasonal places are still shuttered or running reduced hours. The town isn’t dead, but it’s not fully awake either. Don’t arrive expecting a buzzing dining scene — you’ll find a handful of solid options and that’s roughly it.

**Is it worth it?** Yes, if you’re passing through Croatia anyway and want to tick off a genuinely unusual border-crossing curiosity. Yes, if you dislike crowds and don’t need beach weather. Less so if you’re making it a dedicated destination and expecting Adriatic glamour.

**Practical tip:** Neum sits directly on the main coastal road connecting Split and Dubrovnik. The border crossings on either side mean delays in summer that simply don’t exist in April. Use that timing advantage and drive through without the usual queueing misery.
