# Antibes in May: Pretty Much the Sweet Spot
Honestly, if someone asked me when to visit Antibes, May would be near the top of my list. Not because it’s perfect – nothing is – but because it hits a genuinely useful balance that most months don’t.
The weather sits around 20°C, which sounds modest until you’re actually there. It’s warm enough to sit outside at a café without a jacket by midday, comfortable for walking the old town walls for an hour, and occasionally warm enough for a brave dip in the sea. Don’t expect beach weather in the postcard sense. The Mediterranean is still shaking off winter at the start of the month, and even by late May you’re looking at water temperatures that require some commitment. Pack layers for evenings because the temperature drops more than you’d expect once the sun goes.
The rain figure of around 49mm across the month sounds alarming but it usually arrives in short, dramatic bursts rather than grey drizzle that ruins entire days. You might get caught in a proper downpour for an hour, then brilliant sunshine. It’s manageable.
Crowds are where May really earns its reputation. The first three weeks are genuinely pleasant – you can actually walk through the market on Cours Masséna without being elbowed, restaurants have tables available without booking three days ahead, and the Picasso Museum is browsable rather than a slow shuffle. Then Cannes Film Festival arrives in mid-May and the whole region shifts slightly. Antibes itself isn’t the epicentre, but you’ll notice prices nudging up and accommodation tightening near that period.
Everything is open. This matters more than people realise – some shoulder-season visits mean finding shuttered restaurants and reduced hours. In May, you get the full version of the place.
It suits people who want culture and good food over pure beach-baking. Couples, solo travellers, anyone who finds peak summer genuinely exhausting – May works well for you.
**Practical tip:** Book accommodation before the Film Festival dates are announced for that year. Prices around the Cannes fortnight drift upward across the whole Côte d’Azur, Antibes included.
