Where to Stay in Ios

Where to Stay in Ios

Ios has a reputation as a party island, and that reputation is earned, which means where you sleep matters more here than almost anywhere else in the Aegean. The island is small but the geography creates very distinct experiences depending on which part you choose.

Chora, the main hilltop village, is the sweet spot for mid-range travelers. You get the iconic whitewashed alleys, easy access to bars and restaurants, and that classic Cycladic atmosphere without being right on top of the loudest clubs. Staying here means walking everywhere, which you want, because parking and taxis during peak season are a genuine headache. Expect to pay between 80 and 150 euros per night for a decent room with air conditioning and a view. Book a place with a terrace if you can because the sunset over the caldera-style valley is legitimately one of the best things about the island.

Mylopotas Beach is the other main option, and it works well if you want sand outside your door. The beach itself is beautiful, a long curved stretch of blue water with good facilities. Mid-range hotels here tend to offer better value per square meter than Chora, but you sacrifice the charm for convenience. It gets extremely loud at night in August, so if you are a light sleeper, bring earplugs regardless of where you stay.

Avoid the port area, Gialos, for sleeping. It is convenient for ferries but lacks atmosphere and fills up with noise from late arrivals and early departures all night.

The single booking mistake people consistently make on Ios is arriving without a reservation in July or August assuming they will find something on arrival. The island has a relatively small accommodation inventory and it sells out weeks in advance. Same-day availability during peak season is nearly nonexistent for anything decent.

For budget travelers, the hostels clustered near Chora and Mylopotas are genuinely social and well-run. For splurges, small boutique properties on the Chora hillside offer dramatic views at a premium that is usually worth paying at least once.
