The weather is genuinely unpredictable at this point. Early October usually carries some warmth over from summer – you might get temperatures in the low to mid-twenties and the sea is still reasonable for swimming, holding onto heat from months of sunshine. But by mid to late October, things start shifting. You’ll get cooler evenings, the occasional grey day, and Crete’s autumn rain can arrive without much warning. Families with young children chasing beach holidays might find it frustrating.

**One practical tip:** hire a car. October is perfect for driving into the Lasithi Plateau and exploring the villages inland, where the light at this time of year is extraordinary and you’ll essentially have the roads to yourself.
