# Fez in January: What It’s Actually Like

January in Fez is genuinely unpredictable, and that’s the honest answer. The city sits inland and at elevation, which means it doesn’t follow the same mild coastal logic as Marrakech. You can get bright, crisp days where the light hits the medina walls beautifully and you feel like you’ve discovered somewhere secret. You can also get grey, wet, cold days where the ancient streets turn slippery and the damp seeps into everything. Sometimes both happen in the same week. Pack accordingly and don’t build a wardrobe plan around sunshine.

What January does reliably deliver is quiet. The crowds that choke the tanneries and clog the souks in spring and autumn are mostly gone. Tour groups are sparse. The guys who hover near the famous tannery overlooks are less aggressive because frankly there aren’t enough tourists to make the hustle worthwhile. Walking through Fes el-Bali in the early morning feels genuinely medieval in the best possible way, without someone trying to sell you a leather bag every thirty seconds. If atmosphere and authenticity matter to you more than perfect weather, this is actually a strong time to come.

The medina itself never really closes – the restaurants, guesthouses, and most shops operate year-round because locals live there and need things. University of al-Qarawiyyin draws students throughout the year, so there’s a lived energy that doesn’t disappear off-season. Some tourist-oriented businesses keep shorter hours or take informal breaks, but nothing that significantly limits your experience.

January suits independent travelers, photographers, history obsessives, and people who find peak-season tourism genuinely exhausting. It doesn’t suit those who need guaranteed sunshine to enjoy a trip or who have young kids who’ll struggle if a day turns cold and wet with no beach backup plan.

**One practical tip:** Bring a proper warm layer and waterproof shoes. Not suggestions, actual requirements. The riad courtyard that looked gorgeous on Instagram is not heated, the cobblestones get treacherous when wet, and cold feet will ruin days that should have been wonderful.
