Visiting Petra in August
# Petra in August: What You’re Actually Getting Into
Let’s be straight with you: August in Petra is brutal. The Jordanian desert in midsummer is not playing around, and Petra sits in a rocky canyon where temperatures regularly hit 35-38°C by mid-morning. There’s essentially no shade for long stretches of the main Siq walk, and by the time you reach the Treasury, you’re already sweating through your second layer of resolve. Rainfall is almost nonexistent this time of year, which sounds like good news until you realize that also means no cloud cover whatsoever.
That said, it’s not a disaster if you go in knowing what to expect.
The crowds are genuinely mixed. European summer holidays mean tour groups and families descend in reasonable numbers, but the extreme heat actually thins things out compared to spring. Many visitors do a breathless two-hour version and retreat. If you’re willing to suffer slightly longer, you’ll find the further reaches of the site — the Monastery hike, the High Place of Sacrifice trail — surprisingly quiet by 9am. The main monuments are all open, nothing closes seasonally, and vendors are out in force whether you want them to be or not.
Is it worth it in August? For heat-tolerant travelers, budget travelers catching cheaper flights and accommodation, or anyone whose schedule simply doesn’t flex — yes, genuinely. The rose-red rock looks extraordinary in harsh summer light, and there’s something almost cinematic about having the back trails mostly to yourself. For families with young children, older travelers, or anyone who struggles in serious heat, honestly consider October or March instead. You’ll enjoy yourself more.
**One practical tip:** Start at 6am when the gates open. This is not optional advice dressed up as a suggestion. The first two hours are a completely different experience — cooler, quieter, genuinely magical. By 10am the heat is unforgiving and the tour buses have arrived. Get there at dawn, see what you came to see, and be back drinking cold juice in the shade before most people have finished breakfast.
