The Blue Lagoon is genuinely, almost offensively beautiful. That turquoise colour isn’t edited or exaggerated in photos – it actually looks like that. The water is crystal clear, warm, and shallow enough that you can see every rock beneath you. Swimming there on a calm morning feels like floating inside a postcard. The island itself is fascinating in a quiet way – wild thyme and rosemary carpet the paths, there’s almost nobody actually living there, and if you walk away from the lagoon, you’ll find rugged coastal views with barely another person around.
It’s also cheap to reach. A ferry from Malta or Gozo costs a few euros, making this very doable on a tight budget.
## Now For The Honest Part
The Blue Lagoon in summer is absolutely rammed. I mean shoulder-to-shoulder, anchored-boats-everywhere, queuing-for-a-patch-of-sand rammed. Those serene Instagram photos? Taken at 7am in shoulder season. During peak summer, you’re sharing that gorgeous water with hundreds of day-trippers, water taxis, speedboats, and party boats pumping music. The “untouched island” atmosphere evaporates pretty quickly when you’re fighting for sunbed space.
The facilities are minimal and the food options are overpriced and underwhelming for what you get. There’s no real infrastructure here, which is part of the charm but also part of the frustration.
## How To Make It Work
Go early. First ferry, midweek, ideally late May or early October. Walk fifteen minutes inland and suddenly you’re completely alone among the herbs and clifftops – genuinely magical. The crowds thin dramatically once people realise they have to actually walk somewhere.

Yes, visit – but manage your expectations about what kind of experience it is. If you arrive midday in August expecting a peaceful hidden gem, you’ll be disappointed. If you treat it as a beautiful swimming spot that requires smart timing and some crowd tolerance, you’ll absolutely love it. The water alone is worth seeing once. Just don’t let the Blue Lagoon photos sell you a fantasy the reality can’t quite deliver on a busy Tuesday in July.
