Where to Stay in Kotor
Where to Stay in Kotor
Kotor is a town where your accommodation choice genuinely determines the quality of your trip, and with tourism pressure rising steadily, getting this right matters more than it used to.
The Old Town is where most visitors want to stay, and honestly the appeal is real. Waking up inside those medieval walls, stumbling to a café before the cruise ship crowds arrive, hearing the cats wander the cobblestones at night — it earns its reputation. For mid-range travelers, boutique guesthouses within the walls offer atmosphere you simply cannot replicate from a hotel outside. Expect to pay between 80 and 140 euros per night for a decent double in high season. The trade-off is noise. The Old Town does not sleep early, narrow streets amplify sound dramatically, and if your room faces a bar alley, earplugs are mandatory not optional.
The area immediately outside the main gates, particularly heading toward the Škaljari neighborhood or along the northern waterfront, offers a practical middle ground. You get proximity to everything, meaningfully lower prices, and the ability to actually sleep. This is the underrated sweet spot for mid-range visitors who want value without sacrificing convenience.
Avoid the southern stretch along the main road toward Dobrota if you want a walkable base. It looks close on a map but the road is loud, lacks character, and requires a car or constant taxi rides. Many travelers book here thinking waterfront means central and regret it.
For budget travelers, look at guesthouses in Muo or Prčanj across the bay. They require ferry hops but prices drop significantly and the views back toward Kotor are spectacular. Luxury travelers should look at the Perast direction, where several converted palaces offer serious privacy.
The single most common booking mistake is filtering by “sea view” without checking which direction the room actually faces. The bay is beautiful but many so-called sea view rooms overlook parking areas or a narrow strip of water barely visible between buildings. Read recent reviews specifically mentioning the view, not just the listing photos.
