# Tenerife in July: What It’s Actually Like
Let me be straight with you – July in Tenerife is peak season, and you’ll feel it the moment you land.
**The Weather**
Here’s the thing people don’t warn you about: Tenerife isn’t one climate, it’s about five. The south around Playa de las Américas? Reliably hot, dry, and sunny – think 28-30°C with barely a cloud. The north around Puerto de la Cruz is a different story. It gets more cloud cover and the occasional shower, especially in the hills. So where you stay genuinely matters. Rainfall across the island in July is generally low, but don’t assume “Canary Islands in summer” automatically means wall-to-wall sunshine everywhere.
**The Crowds**
Brutal, honestly. This is when Spanish families take their summer holidays alongside British, German, and Scandinavian tourists all descending simultaneously. Beaches like El Médano and Las Teresitas get packed by 10am. Restaurants in tourist areas fill up quickly, and you’ll queue for things you wouldn’t expect to queue for. Teide National Park gets particularly busy – if you want the cable car, book weeks ahead or accept disappointment.
**What’s Open**
Everything. This is genuinely the upside. Every attraction, water park, boat trip, and restaurant is fully operational. If you want maximum choice and flexibility in terms of activities, July delivers.
**Is It Worth It?**
For families with school-age children who have no choice about timing – yes, absolutely. The island handles the crowds reasonably well, the sea temperature is lovely around 23°C, and kids have a genuinely brilliant time. For couples or solo travellers with flexible dates? Shoulder season in May or October gives you 90% of the experience with maybe 50% of the hassle and noticeably cheaper prices.
**One Practical Tip**
Hire a car and stay somewhere slightly inland or away from the main resort strips. You’ll sleep better, pay less, and still reach any beach within 20 minutes. The crowds thin out surprisingly quickly once you leave the coastal hotspots.
