The Villa of the Mysteries frescoes are startlingly vivid, painted in that deep Pompeian red that somehow survived nearly two millennia. Standing in front of them genuinely stops you.
The amphitheatre and bathhouses fill in the picture further – this wasn’t just a city, it was a fully functioning, deeply human place. That’s the magic Pompeii pulls off that photographs simply cannot prepare you for.
Now the honest part.
It is absolutely rammed with tourists, and not just a little bit. Peak season feels like navigating a slow-moving human traffic jam around the main attractions. Signage inside the site is patchy and confusing, and a surprising amount of the site is either closed for restoration or just locked without explanation. You’ll plan to see something specific and find a chain across the entrance. Manage those expectations now rather than standing there frustrated later.
The heat in summer is brutal on those exposed stone streets. Bring water, proper shoes and sunscreen or you’ll be miserable within an hour.
Hiking up Vesuvius above the ruins is genuinely worth adding on – it reframes everything you’ve just walked through when you’re standing at the crater looking down at the bay. It’s also far less crowded than the ruins themselves.
Budget-wise, Pompeii is refreshingly reasonable. Entrance fees won’t break anyone, lunch can be cheap if you step away from the immediate tourist orbit, and Naples nearby keeps accommodation affordable.
