Visiting Pompeii in June
# Pompeii in June: Brace Yourself
Let’s be straight with you: June in Pompeii is hot. We’re talking southern Italian summer heat bouncing off ancient stone with almost zero shade to rescue you. Temperatures regularly sit in the high 20s to low 30s Celsius, and because Pompeii is essentially an open-air archaeological site with very few trees, that sun hits differently. Rainfall is pretty minimal in June, so you’re unlikely to get rained on, but that’s honestly not the blessing it sounds like when you’re melting by 11am.
**The Crowds**
They’re significant. June marks the serious start of tourist season, and Pompeii draws around four million visitors annually. School trips are still trickling through in early June, then family holidays kick in as the month progresses. By mid-morning the main routes feel genuinely congested, especially around the Forum and the House of the Faun. It’s not unmanageable, but don’t expect peaceful contemplation among the ruins.
**What’s Actually Open**
The core site is fully operational, and most of the key houses and structures you’d want to see are accessible. Some of the more delicate areas have limited opening hours or require advance booking, so check the official site before you go rather than assuming everything is walkable on arrival.
**Is It Worth It?**
Honestly, yes – but conditionally. If you’re reasonably fit, heat-tolerant, and book early entry (open at 9am, ideally arrive before 9:30), you can see a lot before the crowds and temperature peak. For families with young children, elderly visitors, or anyone who struggles in heat, June is genuinely tough going. October or April gives you the same incredible site with considerably less suffering.
**One Practical Tip**
Bring significantly more water than you think you need. There are fountains inside the site but they’re not everywhere, and the on-site café is expensive and often crowded. Two litres per person minimum, and wear a hat you’d actually be embarrassed to own – vanity is not your friend here.
