Visiting Cairo in February

# Cairo in February: What It’s Actually Like

Here’s the honest version: February is probably the best time to visit Cairo, and not enough people know that.

The weather sits somewhere genuinely pleasant – cool mornings that require a jacket, afternoons warming up to around 20°C or so, evenings where you’ll want that jacket back. Rainfall is essentially a non-event. Cairo is desert-adjacent and February delivers almost nothing in terms of precipitation. You might see a grey sky for half a day. That’s about as dramatic as it gets. Coming from a northern winter, you’ll feel like you’ve been handed a gift.

The crowds are the real story. Tourism to Egypt runs heavily in the October-to-April window, so February isn’t a secret exactly, but it avoids the absolute chaos of Christmas and New Year. The Pyramids at Giza are busy – they’re always busy – but you’re not fighting through walls of tour groups at every single moment. Get there early, like properly early, and you’ll have experiences that feel almost private. The Egyptian Museum, Khan el-Khalili bazaar, everything is open and functioning normally.

Worth it and for whom? Honestly, almost everyone. If you’re a history person, this is as good as it gets logistically. If you run hot and dread sightseeing in oppressive heat, you’ll be relieved. Older travellers or anyone with mobility considerations will find the cooler temperatures make walking around ancient sites considerably more manageable than summer visits where the heat becomes genuinely punishing.

The one person who might want to reconsider is someone chasing beach weather. Sharm el-Sheikh or the Red Sea coast will feel fresh rather than warm in February – fine for snorkelling with a wetsuit, not ideal for lying around in a bikini.

**One practical tip:** Book your Giza entry tickets, including access inside specific pyramids, well in advance online. The interior tickets especially sell in limited numbers and running out of that particular experience on the day is genuinely gutting. Sort it before you leave home.

February Cairo is the insider move. Take it.
