# Zakynthos in October: The Honest Version

By October, Zakynthos has exhaled. The relentless August crowds have packed their inflatables and gone home, and the island feels like it’s finally allowed to be itself again. That’s either a selling point or a warning, depending on what you’re after.

The weather sits at around 19°C, which sounds perfect on paper and mostly is. You’ll get genuinely warm, sunny days where a swim feels completely reasonable, especially in early October. But the Mediterranean starts asserting itself as the month progresses. Expect some real rainstorms — that 45mm average isn’t a light drizzle situation, it arrives in proper downpours that can write off an afternoon. The sea stays warm though, often warmer than the air, so swimming is still on the table for anyone not precious about sunshine at the same time.

Crowds are thin, which is the main event really. Navagio Beach, the famous shipwreck cove that looks photoshopped in every picture you’ve ever seen, is actually accessible and enjoyable rather than a floating mattress convention. You can get a table at a taverna without negotiating. Turtle-watching tours still run in early October since the loggerhead season is winding down, but you’ll catch the tail end if you go early in the month.

Here’s the catch: the island closes down noticeably, particularly after mid-October. Some beach bars, boat hire places, and restaurants in the resort areas shutter without warning. Laganas — the main party strip — becomes a ghost town, which is either ideal or depressing. The main town, Zakynthos Town itself, stays alive and has genuine local life worth spending time in.

Worth visiting? Yes, particularly for couples, older travellers, hikers, or anyone who finds August holidays actively stressful. Not ideal if you need a buzzing social scene or reliable beach facilities every day.

**Practical tip:** Hire a car immediately. Public transport is sparse at the best of times and in October it’s skeletal. You need wheels to chase the sunshine when it moves, and it will move.
