# Kaş in May: Honest Thoughts
May is genuinely one of the better times to visit Kaş, and I say that as someone who’s also been there in August and spent most of it hiding from the heat and elbowing past tour groups on the harbour.
At 24 degrees, the temperature is just right. You can actually walk around the old town without dissolving, sit at a waterfront restaurant without needing shade every thirty seconds, and consider a boat trip without arriving back looking like a boiled prawn. The sea is still a touch cool for serious swimming — somewhere around 20-22°C — but plenty of people are in the water and you’ll be fine once you commit. The 32mm of rainfall sounds worse than it is. Expect a few proper afternoon showers rather than constant drizzle. They tend to roll in, do their thing dramatically over the mountains, and leave. Pack a light layer and don’t panic.
Crowds are refreshingly manageable. Kaş never gets grotesque in the way Bodrum or Ölüdeniz does, but August and September still bring enough people to make the narrow streets feel smaller than they are. In May, you can actually browse the jewellery and textile shops without feeling pressured, get a table at Bi Lokma without a reservation, and take photos of the Lycian rock tombs without someone’s selfie stick in the frame. Most businesses are open — this isn’t shoulder season in the abandonment sense. Dive operators are running full schedules, boat trips to the sunken city at Kekova are easy to book, and the restaurants have proper menus rather than the abbreviated winter offerings.
It’s particularly worth it if you’re into hiking, diving, or kayaking. The Lycian Way is walkable without heat exhaustion, and the visibility underwater in May is excellent.
**One practical tip:** Don’t pre-book a rigid itinerary around boat trips. Weather can shift quickly in May and boats occasionally cancel. Stay flexible on which day you go, and you’ll be fine.
