# Kalkan in May: Worth the Trip?
May is genuinely one of the better times to visit Kalkan, and I say that as someone who’s also been there in August and wanted to cry into their overpriced cocktail about the crowds.
**What it actually feels like**
Twenty-five degrees sounds perfect on paper, and honestly it mostly is. You’ll have warm, genuinely pleasant days where sitting on a rooftop terrace with a cold Efes feels like exactly the right life decision. Evenings cool down noticeably though, so pack a layer unless you enjoy being that person shivering and pretending you’re fine. The 32mm of rain sounds alarming but it typically arrives as short, sharp showers rather than week-long misery. You might lose an afternoon, rarely more. The sea sits around 22-23°C by late May – swimmable for most people, genuinely lovely by the final week.
**Crowds and vibe**
Early May is quiet. Pleasantly, walkably quiet. By the last two weeks things pick up as half-term approaches, but you’re still nowhere near the August chaos where the tiny harbour streets feel like a fire evacuation. Restaurants are open and happy to see you. Tables are available without that desperate reservation anxiety. Staff are relaxed and actually talk to you.
**What’s open**
Most restaurants, bars and boat trips are running by mid-May. Some smaller places are still finding their rhythm in the first week, so don’t be surprised if one or two spots you read about are still shuttered. The boat trips to Patara beach and the Blue Cave are fully operational and genuinely worth doing.
**Is it worth it and for whom?**
Absolutely yes, particularly for couples, older travellers, anyone who hates crowds, or people who want to actually see the town rather than queue through it. Families should aim for late May when the water is warmer.
**One practical tip**
Book accommodation with a sea view for late May rather than early – prices jump but the light in the evenings hitting that turquoise water is something you’ll actually remember.
