Pastéis de nata from Pastéis de Belém are worth every calorie and the queue. Jerónimos Monastery will stop you mid-sentence. Belém Tower is a little smaller than photos suggest but still atmospheric by the water. These things earned their reputation.

Tram 28. Everyone tells you to ride it, and you probably will, and you’ll spend most of that ride packed shoulder-to-shoulder with other tourists while pickpockets work the crowd. It’s less charming experience, more queuing infrastructure. Walk those hills instead.
The city is genuinely expensive now for what was marketed as a budget destination. Mid-range here means you’re paying Berlin or Barcelona prices in many areas, particularly around Baixa and Chiado. The tourist infrastructure has caught up with the popularity aggressively.
Some of the best neighbourhoods — Mouraria, Santos, Intendente — are still interesting but increasingly feel like they’re performing authenticity rather than living it. Gentrification hit fast and hard.

High is an understatement between May and October. You will queue. You will be in someone’s photo. You will lose entire mornings to logistics. Go in February or March if you have flexibility.
