# Lisbon in May: The Honest Version
May is genuinely one of the better months to visit Lisbon, and I say that without the usual travel writer caveat-dodging. The city hasn’t yet tipped into the brutal summer heat that turns July and August into an endurance test of melting tarmac and aggressive queues. Twenty-one degrees is basically perfect walking weather – warm enough for a t-shirt by afternoon, cool enough that you’re not sweating through your shirt climbing up to Alfama.
The rain figure sounds alarming until you understand what Portuguese rain actually looks like. Those 45 millimetres spread across the month usually means a handful of proper showers, not persistent grey drizzle. You’ll get a heavy downpour, it’ll clear within an hour, and the light afterwards makes the city look absurdly photogenic. Pack a light rain jacket rather than an umbrella – the hills make umbrellas annoying anyway.
Crowds are real but manageable. The summer hordes haven’t fully arrived, so Belém Tower won’t require genuinely medieval levels of patience, and you can actually get a pastéis de nata at Pastéis de Belém without a 45-minute queue making you question your life choices. That said, popular viewpoints like Miradouro da Graça will still be busy on weekends. Go early, like genuinely early, before 9am.
Everything is open, which matters more than it sounds. Some smaller restaurants and neighbourhood spots close in winter. By May, they’re all running. The outdoor terraces are full, Lisbon’s excellent festival calendar is warming up, and evenings are long enough to eat dinner outside without needing a coat.
Who is May perfect for? Walkers, food-focused travellers, anyone who did their research and knows they hate August crowds. It’s slightly less ideal if you’re hoping for reliable beach weather – Cascais and Sintra trips are lovely but the Atlantic is still cold enough to make swimming ambitious rather than pleasant.
**Practical tip:** Book accommodation further in advance than you think necessary. May fills up faster than its reputation suggests, and the good mid-range places disappear first.
