Let me be straight with you. Berat is genuinely one of the most visually striking towns in the Balkans, and most people who go there are quietly amazed they hadn’t heard more about it. But it’s also a place where the reality and the Instagram version have a bit of a gap worth understanding before you book.
The nickname sells itself. Those stacked Ottoman houses climbing the hillside, each with their enormous windows gazing down over the river, genuinely look like nothing else. Walking through Mangalem quarter in the early morning before anyone else is up, with mist sitting in the Osum valley and those white facades catching the light, is a legitimate wow moment. You earn it too, because the streets are steep and uneven and nobody is holding your hand through it.
The castle is enormous and largely unrestored, which is either exciting or frustrating depending on your personality. Inside it there are still actual families living, which feels wonderfully surreal. The Onufri Museum houses some genuinely beautiful Byzantine icons in a working church setting. It’s small but worth an hour of serious attention rather than a quick glance.
Now the honest part. Berat is small. Very small. You can see the main sights comfortably in a day and a half, and by day two you might find yourself sitting in a riverside cafe wondering what else there is. The answer is mostly more coffee and some decent local wine, which honestly isn’t the worst outcome, but if you’re expecting a bustling cultural program, adjust expectations now.
The tourist infrastructure has grown fast and unevenly. Some guesthouses are lovely family-run places with exceptional value, maybe fifteen euros a night with breakfast that would embarrass a London hotel. Others are fine buildings with zero soul. Do your research on accommodation specifically because the quality gap is real.
The wine angle is understated and worth pursuing. Çobo Winery outside town does visits and the local Shesh i Zi grape produces something genuinely interesting.
**Verdict:** Yes, go. Especially if you’re already moving through southern Albania, it’s an easy call. Even as a standalone destination it earns its trip if you pair it with Gjirokastër and give yourself a proper few days in the region. Budget travelers particularly get outsized value here. Just don’t expect more town than there is.
