# Naples in May: Honestly Worth It
May is probably the sweet spot for Naples, though I’d stop short of calling it perfect because nothing about Naples is ever quite perfect, and that’s part of the appeal.
The temperature sits around 21 or 22 degrees, which sounds ideal on paper and mostly delivers in practice. You’ll get warm, genuinely pleasant days where walking the Spanish Quarters or climbing up to San Martino feels like exactly what a Mediterranean city break should be. Pack a light layer anyway. Evenings drop off more than you’d expect, and that 20mm of rainfall has to land somewhere — usually as a short, aggressive afternoon downpour that locals ignore completely and tourists find either charming or stressful depending on their personality.
Crowds are building but haven’t gone fully feral yet. Pompeii in June and July is a genuine endurance test. In May you can move around the site like a human being, read the information panels without someone’s elbow in your ribs, and actually absorb the fact that you’re walking around a Roman city frozen in time. That alone makes May the right call if Pompeii is on your list.
Everything is open. Restaurants are operating full menus, museums are running normally, the ferry to Capri is running regular services. You’re not fighting skeleton-crew shoulder season or the chaos of peak summer — you’re in that comfortable middle ground where the city is alive without being overwhelmed.
Who is May best for? Honestly, almost everyone. Families with school-age kids are mostly still locked into term time, so the demographic skews toward couples, solo travellers and older visitors who move at a pace that suits the city. Naples rewards slowness. It rewards wandering into the wrong street and ending up at someone’s grandmother’s pizza counter.
**One practical tip:** Book Pompeii timed entry tickets before you travel. Not because it’ll be dangerously crowded in May, but because the queue for the ticket desk in direct sun is miserable and completely avoidable.
