Visiting Aegina in July

# Aegina in July: What to Actually Expect

Look, July in Aegina is hot. Not “pleasantly warm Mediterranean” hot – properly, aggressively hot. You’re looking at temperatures regularly hitting 33-35°C, sometimes nudging higher, and the sun feels relentless from about 10am onwards. Rainfall is essentially nonexistent; this is peak dry season, so don’t pack an umbrella. The sea, however, is absolutely glorious – warm, clear, and exactly what you want when you’ve been cooking on a beach for three hours.

The island gets genuinely busy in July. Greeks from Athens make up a huge chunk of visitors since Aegina is only about 40 minutes by hydrofoil from Piraeus, making it one of the most accessible islands in the entire country. Weekends especially fill up fast. The harbour area in Aegina Town gets lively in the evenings – restaurants, bars, people walking around eating pistachio everything (Aegina’s pistachios are legitimately excellent, not a tourist gimmick). Everything is open: tavernas, shops, boat trips to Perdika and Moni island, the Temple of Aphaia, the ghost town of Palaiochora. July is full operation mode.

Is it worth visiting in July? Honestly, it depends entirely on who you are. If you want a proper Greek island summer experience – swimming multiple times daily, eating late, sleeping badly because it’s too warm, loving every minute – then yes, absolutely. Aegina does this well without the chaos of Mykonos or Santorini. It’s relatively affordable, has genuine character, and the smaller beaches like Agia Marina are very swimmable. If you hate crowds and heat, though, you’ll be miserable.

It’s particularly good for people who want a proper beach trip without a complex journey, families doing a shorter Greek holiday, or anyone based in Athens wanting a genuine break.

**One practical tip:** Take the early hydrofoil – first or second departure from Piraeus. You’ll beat the Athenian weekend exodus completely, get your pick of sunbeds, and feel smug for the rest of the day.
