# Akyaka in January: What It’s Actually Like
Look, January in Akyaka is a genuine wildcard, and anyone telling you otherwise is either guessing or selling something.
The weather sits in that awkward Mediterranean winter zone — probably mild by northern European standards, realistically somewhere around 10-14°C on a reasonable day, but with a genuine chance of grey skies, rain, and that particular damp cold that gets into your bones faster than proper freezing temperatures do. The Akyaka valley is famously windy even in summer — it’s why the kitesurfers love it — and in January that wind has an edge to it. You might get a gorgeous crisp sunny week with blue skies and empty streets. You might get a soggy, overcast few days wondering what you were thinking. There’s no honest way to promise you which.
What you will get is the town almost entirely to yourself. Akyaka is small and seasonal at the best of times, and January strips it right back. Several restaurants will be closed or running skeleton schedules. The waterfront feels genuinely quiet — not atmospheric-quiet, more just actually empty. The Azmak River is still beautiful, possibly more so when you’re the only person standing next to it.
For the right person, this is actually the appeal. If you want to walk the river path, explore the Ula road, eat a slow lunch somewhere warm without fighting for a table, and exist in a pretty Aegean town without performance or crowds, January works. It’s particularly good for people who just need to step off the treadmill and don’t need sunshine as part of the deal.
For anyone wanting beach days, watersports, or a buzzing dinner scene, come back in May.
**One practical tip:** Don’t assume your accommodation will be warm. Many smaller guesthouses here aren’t built or equipped for genuine winter heating. Before you book, specifically ask whether there’s central heating or a decent AC unit that runs on heat mode. A cold room kills a winter trip faster than any amount of grey weather.
