September in Albufeira genuinely earns its reputation as the “best month to visit,” and it’s not just travel blogger filler content. The crowds that made August feel like a sweaty theme park queue have mostly gone home, schools are back across Europe, and the place exhales a little.

**The weather is legitimately lovely.** Around 25-26°C means you’re warm without feeling like you’re being slowly cooked. The sea has spent three months absorbing heat and sits around 23°C, so swimming is genuinely comfortable rather than that brave-face dip you do in June. You’ll get occasional rain – maybe two or three brief showers across the whole month rather than proper grey days – so pack a light layer but don’t stress about it.

**The crowds situation is honest but nuanced.** Early September still feels busier than you might expect, particularly the first two weeks when some families squeeze in a final holiday. By mid-to-late September, the Old Town is noticeably quieter. You’ll actually get a table at a restaurant without circling like a vulture, and the beach has breathing room. It’s not deserted – this is still the Algarve – but it’s manageable.

**What’s open:** Almost everything. Bars, restaurants, water parks, boat trips – September is still firmly within the tourist season. Nothing has shut up shop yet. You’ll find full menus rather than skeleton service.

**Who it suits most:** Couples, solo travellers, anyone who found August’s chaos off-putting but still wants proper summer warmth. Families who can pull kids out of school early also do very well here. If you’re chasing cheap deals and an empty beach, January is your month, but you’ll sacrifice everything else.

**One practical tip:** Book accommodation in advance anyway. September’s good reputation means availability gets snapped up faster than people assume. Don’t learn that lesson the expensive way by leaving it until two weeks before.
