# Alghero in February: The Honest Take

Let me be straight with you: February in Alghero is not the postcard version. The old town’s coral-coloured walls look genuinely beautiful in winter light, but you’re also looking at roughly 10 degrees, a decent chance of rain, and the occasional wind off the Mediterranean that cuts straight through whatever jacket you thought was adequate. Pack something warmer than you think you need.

That said, there’s something genuinely lovely about the place in this state.

The crowds are essentially nonexistent. Alghero’s historic centre, which can feel genuinely suffocating in July when cruise passengers and summer tourists pack the narrow Catalan-influenced streets, is yours to wander at your own pace. You can stand on the sea bastions and actually think. The old town’s churches, the cathedral, the little backstreets – you experience them rather than queue through them.

What’s open is the honest complication. Plenty of restaurants operate on reduced hours or close entirely for a chunk of winter, particularly anything leaning heavily on tourist trade. You’ll find the places locals actually use are open and often excellent – good Sardinian food, proper seafood, reasonable prices compared to peak season. Just don’t rock up expecting unlimited options every night. Check ahead, have a backup, be flexible.

The beaches are obviously not a factor. Beautiful to walk along, completely unswimmable, somewhat bleak if beaches are your thing. Neptune’s Grotto boat trips are typically suspended or very limited in February due to sea conditions, which is worth knowing if that’s on your list.

So who should go? Honestly, people who genuinely like European old towns, slow walking, good food, and the slightly melancholy atmosphere of a resort town in its off-season. Couples, solo travellers, anyone wanting to think clearly for a few days. Photographers will have a field day.

**One practical tip:** Book restaurant tables even in February. The good places have limited capacity and the locals fill them up on weekends especially.

Worth it? For the right person, absolutely yes.
