# Alghero in May: The Sweet Spot Nobody Talks About Enough

May is genuinely one of the better times to visit Alghero, and I say that as someone who’s seen it in peak summer and left slightly frazzled.

The weather sits around 21-22°C, which sounds modest but actually feels perfect. You’re warm enough to sit outside with a glass of Vermentino without a jacket by midday, but you’re not melting into the cobblestones. There’s some rain – around 20mm across the month, usually short afternoon showers rather than day-ruining downpours. Pack a light layer and don’t stress about it.

The old town is genuinely lovely to walk around without feeling like you’re being shuffled through a queue. The Catalan Gothic cathedral, the sea walls, the narrow lanes – you can actually stop and look at things. Restaurant tables are available. Locals still outnumber tourists at the morning market. This changes dramatically in July and August, so if you’ve heard Alghero is charming, May is closer to what people mean.

The beaches are open and accessible, though the water is around 18°C – brisk rather than inviting. Dedicated swimmers will go for it. Everyone else will enjoy sitting on Lido San Giovanni watching the sea without fighting for space. Boat trips to the Neptune’s Grotto caves are running by May, which is worth doing because the caves are genuinely spectacular and the coastal approach by boat is half the experience.

Is it worth visiting in May? Yes, particularly if you’re someone who finds crowded tourist hotspots exhausting, you care about eating well without booking three weeks ahead, or you’re combining it with exploring the surrounding countryside and vineyards. Families and couples both fit naturally here. Party-focused travellers might find it a touch quiet.

**One practical tip:** Rent a car, even for a day or two. The coastline north toward Stintino and the interior around Bosa are completely different experiences to the town itself, and public transport makes them awkward. May means lower rental prices and empty roads. Use it.
