# Alicante in May: Pretty Much the Sweet Spot

Look, if someone asked me when to visit Alicante and I actually liked them, I’d probably say May without much hesitation.

The weather sits around 23°C, which sounds almost suspiciously perfect, and it basically is. You’re not melting into the pavement like you will be in July, and you’re not gambling on whether your beach afternoon gets rained out like in March. Nearly 20mm of rainfall across the whole month means you might catch one grey afternoon, maybe two, but nothing that derails a trip. Pack a light layer for evenings because once the sun drops the sea breeze has opinions, but you genuinely don’t need much more than that.

The city in May feels like it’s warming up without having lost its mind yet. The summer crowds that turn the old town into a slow-moving queue don’t really arrive until late June. You can actually walk up to the Santa Bárbara Castle without feeling like you’re in a theme park, get a table at a decent restaurant without a reservation made three weeks in advance, and find space on Postiguet Beach where you can, revolutionary concept, put your towel down. The beach bars are open, the tourist infrastructure is fully running, but the ratio of locals to visitors still feels roughly human.

This timing works especially well for anyone who wants to actually use Alicante as a base rather than just photograph it. Day trips to the Guadalest valley, Tabarca Island, or Villajoyosa are genuinely pleasant rather than logistically exhausting.

Is it worth it? For couples, solo travellers, and anyone who finds peak summer heat and crowds genuinely unpleasant rather than character-building, absolutely yes. Families with young kids do well here too since the sea temperature is around 19-20°C, which is swimmable if you’re not precious about it.

**One practical tip:** Book your castle visit for morning. By noon the exposed hillside gets warm fast, and the views are honestly better in softer light anyway.
