# Amalfi in June: The Sweet Spot Before the Madness
June is probably the month I’d pick for Amalfi if someone twisted my arm, and here’s the honest version of why.
The temperature sits around 26°C, which sounds perfect on paper and mostly is in practice. Mornings feel genuinely lovely – warm enough to swim, cool enough to actually walk up those brutal staircases without arriving at the top looking like you’ve run a marathon. By mid-afternoon it gets sticky, particularly in the narrow streets where the buildings trap the heat. You’ll want to do your exploring before noon and surrender to a long lunch like a sensible person.
The rain figure of roughly 28mm across the month sounds alarming but really isn’t. You’re looking at maybe four or five brief afternoon storms rather than sustained grey misery. They roll in dramatically off the water, everything smells incredible for twenty minutes, and then it’s over. Keep a light layer in your bag and don’t worry about it.
Crowds are real but manageable, which is the genuine selling point of June over July and August. The day-trippers arrive hard from Naples and Positano, and between about 11am and 4pm the main piazza and cathedral steps are genuinely rammed. Evenings, though? The town exhales. Restaurants are fully open, boat trips are running, the ferry connections are reliable. Everything works without the infrastructure being completely overwhelmed.
June suits independent travelers, couples, and anyone who wants to actually eat in a decent restaurant without booking three weeks ahead. If you’re traveling with young children or older relatives who struggle with heat and hills, July will only make those problems worse, so you’re already making the smarter choice.
It’s not a hidden gem moment – nothing about Amalfi really is anymore – but it’s as good as this place gets while still functioning like somewhere humans actually live.
**Practical tip:** Take the ferry between towns instead of the coastal road. The bus is cheap but the schedule is chaos in June, and the ferry takes twenty minutes instead of seventy.
