# Amalfi in March: Honest Thoughts
Look, March on the Amalfi Coast is genuinely lovely, but not in the way the Instagram photos suggest. Those are taken in June. What you’re getting in March is something quieter, moodier, and honestly more interesting if you approach it with the right expectations.
The weather sits around 15°C, which feels pleasant enough in sunshine but noticeably cool when clouds roll in off the water, which they do regularly. And they will roll in. March is one of the wetter months, with around 122mm of rain spread across the month, so you’re not looking at wall-to-wall grey skies, but you should expect proper rainy stretches of a day or two at a time. The sea is dramatic when this happens, the light turns extraordinary, and the town smells of lemons and wet stone in a way that’s genuinely hard to describe but very easy to love.
The crowds are minimal by Amalfi standards, which is one of the best arguments for going. You can actually stand on the cathedral steps without being shoulder-to-shoulder with tour groups. Restaurants have tables available without booking weeks ahead. The coastal road feels almost manageable rather than the bumper-to-bumper chaos of summer.
That said, some smaller restaurants and a handful of boat operators still haven’t fully reopened after winter. You won’t starve or go bored, but don’t plan your trip around a specific highly-recommended trattoria without checking it’s actually open in March.
Is it worth it? Absolutely, for the right person. If you want beaches and aperitivo culture until 10pm, go in June. If you want to actually walk the Path of the Gods without collapsing from heat or queuing to take photos, March makes it genuinely brilliant. Older travellers, couples, photographers, and anyone who hates crowds will find it near-perfect.
**Practical tip:** Pack a genuinely waterproof jacket, not a water-resistant one. A proper waterproof. The kind you’d feel embarrassed wearing at home. You will not feel embarrassed in Amalfi in March.
