# Athens in October: Finally, You Can Breathe

If you visited Athens in July or August, you probably remember standing at the Acropolis feeling like you were being slow-roasted alongside approximately four thousand other sweating tourists. October is the antidote to all of that.

The weather sits around 19°C, which is genuinely pleasant rather than aggressively hot. You’ll want a light jacket for evenings, and there’s about 45mm of rain across the month, mostly arriving as short, dramatic afternoon downpours rather than week-long grey misery. Pack a small umbrella, shrug it off, carry on. The light in October is also softer and more flattering than the brutal summer glare, which matters more than you’d think when you’re looking at ancient marble.

The crowds have thinned considerably. The Acropolis and Parthenon still draw visitors because they’re genuinely unmissable, but you can actually stop and look at things without someone’s selfie stick appearing in your peripheral vision. Lines are shorter, restaurants aren’t turning tables at breakneck speed, and locals have reclaimed their neighbourhoods. The city feels more like itself.

Everything worth visiting is open. Museums, archaeological sites, rooftop bars – October sits comfortably inside normal operating season. Some beach clubs have closed but honestly, the sea is still perfectly swimmable at around 22°C if that appeals to you.

Is it worth it? For most people, October is honestly one of the better months to visit. The heat won’t exhaust you, your euros go slightly further as some accommodation drops in price, and the overall experience is more relaxed. It’s particularly good if you’re interested in actually absorbing history rather than just surviving it, or if you want to eat and drink your way through the city without feeling completely frantic.

It suits couples, solo travellers, and anyone over the age of thirty-five who has quietly made peace with the fact that August in Greece is for people with higher pain thresholds.

**Practical tip:** Book Acropolis tickets online in advance regardless of month. The queue for on-the-day tickets remains stubbornly unpleasant even in October.
