Ayia Napa in December is a completely different animal to the place you’ve seen on Instagram. The clubs are shut, the beach bars are padlocked, and a good chunk of the restaurants have pulled their shutters down until April. If you’re expecting even a shadow of the summer madness, you’ll be disappointed before you’ve finished your first coffee.

The weather is genuinely unpredictable. You might land in warm, pleasant sunshine hitting the low twenties, which honestly feels lovely. You might also spend three days watching grey skies dump rain onto an empty promenade. December sits in Cyprus’s wetter season, so rainfall is a real possibility rather than a distant concern. Pack layers and something waterproof regardless of what the forecast says when you leave home.

Crowds are essentially non-existent. The town is quiet in a way that feels slightly eerie if you know what it looks like full. Some people genuinely love this – the beach is yours, the roads are clear, and locals are visible for the first time all year. A smaller selection of tavernas and cafes does stay open, serving decent Cypriot food without the tourist markup, which is a genuine pleasure.

Is it worth going? That depends entirely on who you are. If you want a cheap, peaceful Mediterranean escape for walking, eating well, and genuinely switching off, yes, it can work. The coastline is still beautiful, the Blue Lagoon area is stunning without a hundred boats anchored in it, and Cape Greco is far more enjoyable to explore when you’re not melting. But if you need energy, nightlife, or reliable sunshine to enjoy a holiday, be honest with yourself and go somewhere else.

**One practical tip:** Don’t assume a hotel is open just because you can book it online. Call ahead or check recent reviews specifically mentioning winter stays. Nothing kills a trip faster than arriving somewhere that’s technically operating but running on a skeleton crew with half the facilities closed.
