Visiting Bar in April

# Bar in April: Catching Montenegro’s Coast Before It Wakes Up

Bar in April is genuinely in-between territory, and whether that works for you depends entirely on what you’re after.

The weather is unpredictable in a way that can feel either refreshing or maddening. Temperatures hover somewhere in the mid-teens, occasionally hitting 18 or 19 on a good day, but you’ll also get grey spells, wind off the Adriatic, and rain that arrives without much warning. Pack a proper jacket. Don’t pack your expectations of lying on a beach.

The crowds are minimal, and this is the actual draw. Bar doesn’t have the romantic polish of Kotor or the party infrastructure of Budva, so when the summer hordes aren’t there, you get a fairly ordinary Montenegrin port town to yourself. That’s not a criticism – it means you can walk through Old Bar, the ruined hilltop fortress above the modern town, without anyone photobombing you or queuing in front of every archway. It’s atmospheric in the grey and quiet in a way it simply isn’t in July.

What’s open is patchy. Some restaurants and cafes are running, particularly around the main square and marina, but you’ll find places shut without explanation and reduced hours everywhere. The old olive tree – supposedly over 2,000 years old and sitting in an orchard near Stari Bar – is accessible year-round and genuinely worth the short walk. The beaches exist but they’re not the point in April.

Is it worth visiting? If you’re combining it with travel further along the coast, absolutely yes – it makes a logical stop between Ulcinj and Kotor, and the train route north through the mountains is spectacular. As a standalone destination in April, it’s honest but modest. It suits slower travellers, people interested in the unremarkable texture of a real Montenegrin town, or those using it as a base for hiking nearby.

**Practical tip:** The train to Podgorica or north toward KolaĊĦin runs from Bar station and the mountain scenery is genuinely extraordinary. Buy your ticket on the day and go.
