Some smaller guesthouses and museum-style houses do close or keep erratic hours, so message ahead rather than assuming.

Is it worth it? For photographers, moody solo travellers, or anyone who actively dislikes tourist infrastructure, yes, genuinely. For families with young children or people who need a certain level of comfort and predictability, probably not your best moment to visit — come in May instead.

**One practical tip:** Bring proper waterproof shoes, not trainers that are “fine in light rain.” The castle walk involves steep uneven stone, and wet leather soles on wet cobbles is how holidays become incidents.

Berat in January rewards the right kind of traveller. Just go in knowing what you’re getting.
