# Berat in June: What It’s Actually Like
June is honestly one of the better times to visit Berat, and I say that as someone who’s been burned by terrible timing in the Balkans before.
**The weather is genuinely pleasant.** That 25°C average feels comfortable rather than punishing, which matters enormously in a town where you’re essentially going to spend your days climbing steep cobblestone streets up to the castle. By July and August those same streets become a sweaty ordeal. June hits a sweet spot where you can actually enjoy the walk up through the Ottoman neighbourhoods without desperately searching for shade every three minutes. The 10mm of rain is barely worth mentioning – you might catch one brief afternoon shower across the whole trip, maybe two.
**Crowds are manageable but growing.** Berat isn’t Santorini, but it’s not a secret anymore either. June sits in that reasonable middle ground where the serious summer rush hasn’t fully arrived. Weekends get noticeably busier than weekdays, particularly around the castle and Mangalem quarter. Tour groups appear but don’t dominate. You can actually linger at the viewpoints and take photos without strangers’ shoulders in every frame.
**Everything is open.** This sounds obvious but it matters – smaller Albanian towns can be surprisingly hit-and-miss in shoulder season. By June, restaurants, guesthouses and the Onufri Museum inside the castle are all reliably operating. You won’t arrive somewhere to find a handwritten closing sign.
**Who should go in June?** Honestly, almost anyone. Families with kids, older travellers who’d struggle in serious heat, photographers wanting good light without haze, people who want a comfortable base for day trips to Apollonia or the Osumi Canyons. It’s particularly good if you’re sensitive to heat but still want that southern Albanian sunshine.
**One practical tip:** book your accommodation earlier than you think necessary. The town has limited good options at different price points, and the better-located guesthouses in the old town fill up weeks ahead, especially for weekends.
Go in June. You won’t regret it.
