# Brač in May: The Sweet Spot Before the Madness

Honestly, May on Brač might be the best-kept secret on the Dalmatian coast, and I say that as someone who’s also visited in August and spent most of that trip fantasizing about having the island to myself.

The weather sits around 20 degrees, which sounds almost disappointingly mild until you’re actually there. It’s warm enough for a light dress or shorts during the day, cool enough that you’re not sweating through every hillside walk up to Vidova Gora. You might get a few rainy days – roughly 20mm spread across the month – but these tend to be short, moody affairs that clear up by afternoon rather than full washouts. Pack a layer and a small umbrella and you’ll barely notice.

The crowds situation is genuinely good. Bol, which turns absolutely feral in July and August around Zlatni Rat, is still manageable. You can actually park. You can find a table at a konoba without hovering awkwardly. The famous beach still looks beautiful without three hundred sunbeds stacked end to end. Local people are in a noticeably better mood.

Most things are open by May. Restaurants, boat rental places, the ferry connections – the island has properly woken up after winter. You won’t hit the dead-shoulder-season problem where half the tavernas have a sad handwritten “closed” sign on the door. That said, some of the more ambitious beach bars and the peak-season boat trips might not be fully running until June, so temper expectations slightly.

Who is this month actually for? Hikers, cyclists, people who want to eat well without booking two weeks in advance, couples, anyone who breaks into a mild sweat just reading the words “peak season surcharge.” Not ideal if you’re specifically chasing hot beach weather for swimming – the sea is still around 18 degrees, so brave faces required.

**One practical tip:** book your car hire early regardless. Even in May, the pickups at Split airport get tight, and showing up without a reservation on a small island is a genuinely unpleasant surprise.
