# Cádiz in December: Honest Thoughts
Let’s be straight with you: December in Cádiz is not the postcard version. The famous light is softer, the Atlantic wind has opinions, and those 57.9mm of rainfall means you will almost certainly get caught in at least one proper downpour. It doesn’t rain every day, but when it comes in off the ocean, it means business.
That said, 17°C is genuinely pleasant if you’ve come from anywhere in northern Europe. You won’t be swimming, but you can absolutely sit outside for lunch without your coat on a good day. The city feels fresh rather than harsh.
The crowd situation is honestly the best thing about coming now. Cádiz in summer is packed, noisy, and the old town feels slightly theme-parked. In December it belongs to itself again. You’ll share the narrow streets with locals doing actual errands, old men sitting outside bars, kids on their way home from school. The Cathedral looks better without a queue snaking around it.
Almost everything is open. This isn’t a summer-resort town that shuts down in winter — people live here year-round and the tapas bars, markets, and bodegas are all operating normally. The Mercado Central is wonderful any month, but in December you’re not competing with tourists for elbow room. La Viña neighbourhood especially feels genuinely lived-in.
Is it worth it? For beach holidays, genuinely no — wait until May. But if you want to understand why people actually love this city, December is revealing. The light hits the white buildings differently. You eat long lunches. You slow down. Photographers, solo travellers, couples who’ve done the obvious European December cities — this works really well for them.
One practical tip: book accommodation in the old town specifically, not the outskirts. When the rain arrives and the wind picks up, you want to be able to walk everywhere without needing transport. The peninsula is small enough that a good central position means you’re never stranded, just pleasantly stuck inside a bar.
