# Cagliari in July: Hot, Busy, But Worth It

Let’s be straight with you: July in Cagliari is *hot*. Not pleasantly warm, not balmy – genuinely, properly hot. That 29°C average is the number on paper, but walking the steep lanes of Castello in the afternoon feels considerably more brutal when the sun is bouncing off pale limestone and there’s zero shade. The 5mm of rain is basically theoretical. You won’t see it.

The city is buzzing in a way that has both upsides and real downsides. Sardinians themselves are still around – they haven’t entirely abandoned Cagliari for the beach towns yet – which means the place retains some authentic energy. But the beaches closest to the city, particularly Poetto, get absolutely rammed on weekends. Think families, umbrellas shoulder-to-shoulder, queues for the bus back into town. It’s lively and fun if that’s your thing, genuinely exhausting if it isn’t.

Everything is open. Restaurants, museums, the archaeological collection at the National Museum, the Roman amphitheatre – it’s all running. The evening passeggiata along Via Roma comes alive properly in summer, and outdoor dining actually makes sense rather than feeling optimistic. The market at San Benedetto is worth an early morning visit before the heat takes hold.

**Is it worth visiting in July?** Honestly, yes – with conditions. If you’re a sun-worshipper who wants beach time with a proper city to explore in the evenings, Cagliari delivers better value and more character than most Sardinian beach resorts. If you’re hoping to wander comfortably and sightsee for hours at a time, you’ll struggle. The heat genuinely limits what you can do between midday and 4pm.

It’s best suited to people who can adapt their rhythm – slow mornings, beach or pool in the afternoon, city exploration once things cool down after 6pm.

**One practical tip:** Book your accommodation with air conditioning confirmed, not just listed as a feature. In July, a room that’s merely “ventilated” will make you miserable by night two.
