# Cannes in January: Honest Thoughts

Let’s be straight with you – Cannes in January is a completely different animal from the glittering festival version you’ve seen in photographs. That’s either a problem or the whole point, depending on what you’re after.

The weather sits around 11-12°C, which is mild compared to most of northern Europe but genuinely cool once the sea breeze picks up. Pack a proper jacket. You’ll also catch some rain – nearly 70mm spread across the month means periodic grey, wet days that can feel relentless when you’re walking the Croisette with your collar up. It’s not constant, but plan for it rather than being surprised.

The crowds are essentially non-existent. The Palais des Festivals becomes a quiet, slightly surreal building you can actually walk past without fighting through selfie-takers. The Boulevard de la Croisette, which feels electric in May and chaotic in summer, becomes almost meditative. You can walk it end to end without dodging anyone, which is genuinely lovely.

The honest downside is closures. Plenty of restaurants take their annual break in January, some boutiques do the same, and certain beach clubs are completely shuttered. You won’t struggle to eat well, but you’ll have fewer options than you’d expect from a town this size. The Marché Forville market is still running though, and it’s excellent – local produce, far fewer tourists photographing olives.

Is it worth going? For couples wanting somewhere quiet and relatively affordable on the French Riviera, absolutely yes. For people expecting the Cannes they’ve imagined, no. The town feels like it belongs to locals in January, which has real charm if that’s your register. Hotel prices drop considerably, and you can stay places that would be financially painful in peak season.

**Practical tip:** Check restaurant opening times individually before you go rather than assuming. A surprising number simply close on multiple weekdays during January, and there’s nothing more deflating than arriving at a locked door in the rain.
