# Cannes in September: The Sweet Spot Nobody Talks About

September is honestly one of the better times to visit Cannes, and I’ll tell you why without the usual glossy brochure nonsense.

The weather sits around a comfortable 24-25°C, which means warm enough to swim and sit on a terrace without melting into your rosé. You’ll get some rain – roughly 35mm across the month, usually arriving as sharp afternoon thunderstorms rather than grey all-day drizzle. These clear fast, the light afterwards is genuinely beautiful, and you’re rarely losing a full day to bad weather. Pack a light layer and don’t stress about it.

The crowds thin out noticeably after the first week. French families are back at school and work, which transforms the Croisette from shoulder-to-shoulder chaos into something you can actually walk along without wanting to cry. The beach clubs are still operating, the restaurants haven’t gone into hibernation, and the shops are open. You’re getting the infrastructure of peak season with considerably less of the misery.

The sea temperature is still excellent – typically around 23°C – which means late-September swimming is genuinely enjoyable rather than performative. This matters in Cannes because the beach is fundamentally why you’re there.

Who is September actually good for? Couples, solo travellers, anyone who finds August crowds genuinely exhausting. It works well if you want to island-hop to Île Sainte-Marguerite without queueing aggressively for a boat. It’s also worth noting that Cannes without a major festival is a different, quieter town – some people find that anticlimactic, others find it a relief.

It’s not perfect. Some smaller restaurants start reducing hours mid-month, and a handful of beach establishments close after the 15th. The energy is lower if you wanted the full glamorous circus.

**Practical tip:** Book accommodation in the streets behind the Croisette rather than on it. You pay significantly less, you’re still walking distance from everything, and you’ll sleep better without the late-night noise. Simple decision that improves the whole trip.
