Visiting Capri in March

Weather in March: Average high 14.1°C, 45mm rainfall.

# Capri in March: Pretty Quiet, Pretty Damp

Look, March in Capri is not the glossy magazine version. The island is still technically in its off-season hibernation, and while that has genuine appeal, you should know what you’re walking into.

**What it actually feels like**

Fourteen degrees sounds almost pleasant until the wind comes off the water. The island sits exposed in the Bay of Naples, and that marine chill has teeth. Pack layers you actually mean to wear, not just stuff in a bag hopefully. The 45mm of rain spread across the month means you’ll probably lose at least two or three days to grey drizzle, possibly more if your timing is unlucky. The light, when it does appear, is genuinely beautiful – soft, clear, nothing like the harsh summer glare. The bougainvillea isn’t out yet, but the lemons are still hanging on the trees and the island looks surprisingly lush.

**Crowds and what’s open**

This is the real draw. The notorious summer crush – the day-trippers piling off ferries every twenty minutes, the queues for the funicular, the impossible restaurant markups – basically doesn’t exist. You can walk the paths to Villa Jovis or down to the Faraglioni rocks and hear actual birdsong. The flip side is that a meaningful number of restaurants, shops and boat hire places are still shuttered. Anacapri is more reliably open than Capri town. The Blue Grotto still operates but is weather-dependent, and March seas cancel it regularly.

**Is it worth it, and for whom**

Honestly, yes – for the right person. If you want photography, walking, reading on a quiet terrace and don’t need buzzing beach culture, March delivers something genuinely special. If you’re visiting for the glamorous social scene or a proper beach holiday, wait until at least May.

**One practical tip**

Check the ferry schedules before you commit to anything. Rough weather in March causes cancellations from both Naples and Sorrento, sometimes for consecutive days. Don’t book a tight connection home from Naples airport.
