Visiting Cassis in September
# Cassis in September: The Sweet Spot Nobody Talks About
September in Cassis is genuinely one of those times where the destination and the calendar align almost perfectly, and I say that as someone who’s been there in peak July and wanted to cry into my overpriced rosé.
The weather is legitimately good. Temperatures sit in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius for most of the month, occasionally touching the high 20s in early September. It’s warm enough to swim comfortably, warm enough to sit outside every evening, but you’re not melting into the pavement. There’s some rainfall risk, particularly later in the month, and occasionally you’ll get an afternoon storm rolling in dramatically over the Calanques. Pack a light layer for evenings regardless. The sea temperature is still excellent from the summer’s heat, which matters if swimming is your priority.
Crowds drop noticeably after the first week. French school holidays end in early September, which essentially cuts the main tourist wave in half overnight. The harbour restaurants still fill up at dinner, but you can actually walk the port without feeling like cattle. You can kayak into the Calanques without queuing behind forty other boats. You can get a table for lunch without a reservation at most places. This is not a small thing.
Almost everything stays open through September. Boat trips to the Calanques run regularly, the wine estates around town are operating and frankly more interesting because harvest season is happening around you, restaurants are still in full summer mode. You’re not yet hitting the shoulder season closures that creep in during October.
So is it worth it? Yes, clearly, if you want the actual experience of Cassis rather than surviving it. It’s ideal for couples, solo travellers, anyone who finds peak-season Provence exhausting rather than charming. Families with younger children who have flexible school arrangements would love it too.
**Practical tip:** Book your boat trip to the Calanques the moment you arrive, not the morning you want to go. They still sell out, even in September.
