Visiting Chios in November
# Chios in November: The Island Basically to Itself
Look, November in Chios is a bit of a gamble, and anyone telling you otherwise is trying to sell you something.
The weather sits in that genuinely unpredictable Mediterranean autumn zone — you might get crisp, sunny days in the low teens that feel absolutely lovely for walking around, or you might get grey skies, wind off the Turkish coast, and rain that arrives with serious intent. There’s no honest way to promise you which version you’ll get. Pack layers, bring a waterproof, and adjust your expectations accordingly.
What you will get, almost certainly, is the island almost entirely to yourself. The tourist infrastructure largely shuts down after October. Plenty of restaurants in Chios Town will be closed, some hotels in the beach villages won’t be operating, and the famous mastic villages — Pyrgi, Mesta, Olympi — will be quiet in a way that feels genuinely medieval rather than performatively so. That’s actually quite special if you’re someone who finds beauty in emptiness rather than frustration.
The mastic producers are often still active this time of year, which is interesting context for wandering around. The markets in Chios Town carry on as normal because this is a real, functioning Greek island with an actual population, not a resort destination. You can eat well, have proper conversations, and move at a pace that summer simply doesn’t allow.
Who should go? Honestly, the independent traveller who reads history, enjoys slow meals, doesn’t need a beach, and finds off-season melancholy atmospheric rather than depressing. If you need sunshine guarantees and a cocktail by a pool, wait until June.
Who should probably not go? Anyone with young kids who need beach days, anyone flying specifically for the sea swimming, anyone whose holiday mood is entirely weather-dependent.
The island has real character that summer crowds obscure. November strips it back to something more honest.
**Practical tip:** Check ferry schedules carefully before booking anything. November weather can disrupt Chios connections from Piraeus more than you’d expect, and being stranded here — while charming — might not fit your return flight plans.
