# Corfu in December: The Island With Its Guard Down
Let’s be straight with you: Corfu in December is not the Corfu of Instagram. The beach bars are shuttered, the tourist menus have been packed away, and the famous turquoise water looks distinctly grey and choppy under a heavy sky. Temperatures sit around 9 degrees, which sounds manageable until a wet wind comes off the Ionian and cuts straight through whatever jacket you thought was adequate.
The rain is real. Around 65mm across the month means you’re not dodging occasional showers, you’re planning your days around them. Mornings can be beautiful and clear, then the afternoon turns dramatic fast.
So why go? Because the island is genuinely itself right now.
Corfu Town in December is one of the more quietly lovely places you can spend a few days in Europe. The Venetian architecture in the old town doesn’t need sunshine to be extraordinary. The alleyways are empty, the locals are actually in the cafes and tavernas rather than outnumbered by tourists, and you can walk the Liston or explore the Old Fortress without a single selfie stick in your peripheral vision. The food gets better too, oddly – traditional places that spend summer knocking out safe tourist dishes return to cooking proper Corfiot food because their customers now actually care.
Most tourist infrastructure is closed. Expect roughly half the restaurants to be shut, water taxis non-operational, and many villages eerily quiet. Getting around without a car becomes genuinely difficult.
**Is it worth it?** For couples, solo travellers, or anyone who loves slow European city breaks and doesn’t need a beach, honestly yes. For families expecting a holiday or anyone who needs warmth, absolutely not.
**One practical tip:** Book accommodation directly with smaller hotels or guesthouses rather than through platforms. Half the listed properties aren’t actually operating in December, and the ones that are will often negotiate seriously on price and frequently include breakfast. You can stay somewhere genuinely lovely for very little money, which in peak season would cost a fortune.
