Visiting Denia in March

# Denia in March: Honest Take

March in Denia is genuinely unpredictable, and you should know that going in. The Mediterranean can be kind – bright sunny days, temperatures nudging 17 or 18 degrees, the castle glowing in that particular Spanish afternoon light. It can also be grey, windy and wetter than you expected, with a chill that gets into old stone buildings and stays there. Pack for both realities and you’ll be fine. Pack for summer and you’ll be miserable.

That said, there’s something really appealing about Denia in March if you’re the right kind of traveller. The town is essentially still in local mode. The restaurants along the port are open, the market runs as normal, you can get a table anywhere without thinking twice. The famous Denia red prawns are on menus and actually affordable compared to high season prices. The old town and castle are quiet enough that you can wander properly rather than shuffling through.

The beach is obviously not a swimming proposition for most people – water temperatures sit around 13 or 14 degrees – but the Marineta Cassiana promenade is genuinely lovely for walking, especially if you get a clear morning. The mountains behind the town are green and dramatic in a way they simply aren’t by July.

What’s closed or limited? Some of the more seasonal beach bars and tourist-facing places won’t have fully opened yet. Boat trips are hit and miss depending on weather and whether operators have started up. Don’t build an itinerary around things that require advance booking until you’ve checked they’re actually running.

Is it worth it? Yes, if you want somewhere to genuinely relax, eat well, walk around and not feel like you’re competing for space with anyone. It suits couples, people who enjoy slow travel, hikers using Denia as a base for the Montgó natural park, and anyone on a budget.

**Practical tip:** bring a decent waterproof layer. Not a heavy coat, but something windproof. The seafront gets breezy and March doesn’t owe you sunshine.
