# Dubrovnik in December: The Honest Version

Let’s get the obvious thing out of the way first. Dubrovnik in December is cold, grey, and occasionally soaking wet. Average temperatures hover around 8 or 9 degrees, and you’ll get roughly 65mm of rain across the month, often arriving in dramatic Mediterranean downpours rather than polite drizzle. The Adriatic looks moody and steel-coloured. Pack accordingly and don’t pretend otherwise.

That said, this might actually be the best time to visit if you have a particular personality type.

The crowds are genuinely, almost shockingly absent. The Old Town, which spends summer feeling like a cruise ship permanently docked on land, becomes a place you can actually inhabit. You can walk the city walls without pressing yourself against strangers. You can sit in a cafe and hear yourself think. Stradun, that gorgeous main limestone street, is yours in a way it simply isn’t between May and September. Locals reclaim the place and it starts feeling like an actual town rather than a theme park.

Most restaurants and bars within the walls stay open, though some spots outside do pull down the shutters for winter. The cathedral, Rector’s Palace, and the Maritime Museum all operate normally. Advent markets set up from early December, adding some warmth and mulled wine to the atmosphere, which genuinely helps. Christmas Eve mass in the cathedral is worth attending even if you’re not particularly religious.

Is it worth it? For history lovers, photographers, and anyone who finds summer tourism exhausting, absolutely yes. For beach people, families with young children expecting sunshine and swimming, genuinely no. Be honest with yourself about which category you fall into.

**One practical tip:** Bring waterproof shoes with actual grip. Those beautiful limestone streets become legitimately treacherous when wet. People slip constantly. Tourists in trainers shuffle around looking nervous while locals stride past in proper footwear. Sort your shoes before you go and you’ll spend your entire trip feeling smugly comfortable instead of anxious.

December Dubrovnik rewards the right traveller enormously. Just know who you are first.
