Visiting Elba in October

# Elba in October: The Island Exhales

By the time October arrives, Elba has basically stopped performing. The summer circus — the beach umbrellas stacked shoulder to shoulder, the queues for ferries, the restaurants with laminated menus in six languages — it’s winding down fast, and honestly that’s either the best or worst thing about visiting then, depending entirely on who you are.

The weather is genuinely unpredictable. Early October can still feel like summer, warm enough to swim and eat outside without a jacket. Late October is a different story — cooler, occasionally rainy, sometimes grey for days at a stretch. You cannot plan around this. You have to be the kind of traveller who shrugs at a wet Tuesday and finds a bar instead.

Crowds are minimal, which sounds appealing until you realise that “minimal” also means “a lot of things are closed.” Some beach restaurants shut after the first week of October. Certain boat trips stop running. A handful of hotels close entirely before the month is out. The island isn’t dead — Portoferraio still has life, locals reappear, the hiking trails become genuinely pleasant — but if your vision of Elba involves a specific restaurant you read about, check very carefully that it’ll still be open.

What you actually get in October is the island’s real character. The interior is beautiful for walking. The Napoleon sites — his residence at Villa dei Mulini, the summer house at San Martino — are accessible without fighting tourists. Seafood is still excellent. Wine from the local vineyards is worth seeking out. The light in the afternoons is extraordinary.

Worth visiting? Yes, but for a specific type of person. If you like hiking, quiet evenings, eating well without a reservation, and aren’t dependent on guaranteed sunshine or guaranteed beach days, October Elba is genuinely lovely. If you need the full summer package, you’ll feel like you arrived to help pack up after a party.

**Practical tip:** Book accommodation that’s confirmed open through your exact dates — don’t assume, email and ask directly.
