# Elounda in October: The Honest Version

October in Elounda is genuinely one of those months where you’re rolling the dice a little, and it’s worth knowing that going in.

The weather sits in an awkward in-between zone. Early October can still feel like summer – warm enough to swim, genuinely hot in the middle of the day, that beautiful Cretan light doing its thing over the salt flats and Spinalonga. But by mid to late October, things shift. You’ll get cooler evenings, the occasional grey day, and rainfall becomes a real possibility rather than a theoretical one. Some years it stays gorgeous until Halloween. Some years it doesn’t. Nobody can promise you which version you’re getting.

What you *can* count on is the crowds thinning out considerably. Elounda in peak summer is genuinely rammed – luxury hotels at full capacity, boats queuing to cross to Spinalonga, waterfront restaurants with waits. By October, that’s largely gone. The place exhales. You can walk around Plaka without feeling like you’re in a theme park, and actually have a conversation with the person running your boat trip to the island rather than being processed through it.

The flip side is that some things start closing. Certain boat services to Spinalonga run reduced schedules or stop entirely in late October, so check that specifically before you book if it’s a priority. A handful of restaurants and smaller hotels close up for the season, though plenty stay open, particularly in Elounda itself.

So is it worth visiting? For some people, absolutely yes. If you want a quieter, more relaxed pace, cheaper accommodation, and you’re happy exploring the area, walking, eating well without the circus – October works really well. If you’re laser-focused on beach weather and want the full sun-and-sea package, the uncertainty might frustrate you.

**Practical tip:** Book Spinalonga boat tickets in advance and confirm the operator is still running when you arrive. Schedules genuinely vary week by week in October and turning up to a closed jetty is a very avoidable disappointment.
