# Faro in December: The Honest Version

Look, Faro in December is not the Algarve you see on Instagram. The terracotta rooftops and the golden lagoon are still there, but they’re wrapped in a grey, slightly damp reality that nobody puts on a postcard.

Temperatures hover around 10 degrees, which sounds manageable until you factor in the wind cutting across the Ria Formosa. It’s not brutal cold, but it’s not sit-outside-with-a-coffee weather either, despite what optimistic locals will attempt. You’ll get roughly 65mm of rain across the month, meaning several genuinely wet days scattered among brighter spells. The light, when it does appear, is genuinely lovely – soft and low, nothing like the harsh summer glare.

The crowds are essentially gone. This is either the point or the problem, depending on why you’re there. The old town is actually walkable without dodging selfie sticks. You can get into the Bone Chapel, wander the cathedral square, and sit in a restaurant without a reservation while the waiter actually has time to talk to you. That part is genuinely lovely.

What’s open is the real question. Faro isn’t a heavily seasonal resort town like Albufeira, so the city itself functions normally. Most restaurants, cafes, and museums stay open. The Ria Formosa ferry trips still run, though less frequently. You’re not going to find everything shuttered.

Is it worth visiting? Honestly, yes – but only if you’re not chasing beach weather. December Faro suits people who want cheap flights and hotels, slow mornings, birdwatching in the nature reserve, day trips to less-visited villages, and actually connecting with a place rather than consuming it. It’s a genuinely pleasant city break if your expectations are calibrated correctly.

If you need sunshine and warmth, go somewhere else. This isn’t that.

**Practical tip:** Pack layers rather than one heavy coat. You’ll be warm in the afternoon sun, then cold again by 5pm when darkness drops surprisingly fast. A light waterproof over a decent jumper covers most situations without filling your bag.
