# Genoa in September
September is honestly one of the better times to show up in Genoa, and the city doesn’t make a big song and dance about it, which suits the place perfectly. Genoa has never really been interested in performing for tourists, and by September it’s largely stopped having to.
The temperature sits around 20 degrees, which feels just right for walking the *caruggi* — those narrow medieval lanes that make up the old town. You’re not sweating through your shirt climbing up to Castello D’Albertis, and you’re not shivering at an outdoor table in the evening. Bring a light layer for after dark because the sea breeze off the Ligurian coast has some bite once the sun drops. The 20mm of rainfall is nothing dramatic, but you’ll likely catch one or two proper afternoon downpours. They pass quickly and the streets smell incredible afterwards.
Crowds are noticeably thinner than July and August, when Italian families from the hotter inland cities descend on the coast. By September, schools are back and Genoa returns to feeling like a real working port city rather than a reluctant holiday destination. The aquarium, which is genuinely excellent and not just a tourist trap, is accessible without planning military strategy around the queues. Palazzo Rosso and the other Rolli palaces on Via Garibaldi are open and unhurried.
The focaccia is still fresh every morning, the pesto is still absurdly good, and the restaurants are actually staffed properly rather than running skeleton summer crews.
Who should come in September? Anyone who likes cities rather than beaches, people who appreciate architecture and food over sunbathing infrastructure, and frankly anyone who finds the Italian summer crowds exhausting. Genoa rewards curiosity and penalises people who just want everything handed to them on a tourist trail.
**One practical tip:** Get a bit lost in the old town on purpose, but do it before 7pm. Some of those alleys get genuinely dark and unwelcoming after that, and not in a romantic way.
