Visiting Girona in April

# Girona in April: What to Actually Expect

April in Girona is genuinely one of those months where you’re rolling the dice a little, and honestly that’s fine as long as you know going in.

The weather is the classic Catalan spring situation: capable of being absolutely glorious and equally capable of dumping rain on you for three days straight. You can get warm, sunny afternoons where the Onyar riverfront looks like a postcard and you’re eating outside in a light jacket, and you can get grey, wet days where the medieval streets funnel wind in unpleasant directions. Pack layers, bring a proper waterproof rather than a flimsy packable thing, and just accept that you might spend one afternoon in a cafĂ© rather than wandering the old city walls. There are worse fates.

Crowds are a real consideration because Girona in April sits in a slightly awkward spot. It’s past the quiet winter lull but before the summer surge, so you’ll encounter other tourists without feeling overwhelmed. The city has genuinely exploded in popularity partly thanks to its Game of Thrones filming locations and partly because Barcelona day-trippers increasingly make the train journey up. Weekends can feel busier than you’d expect for a city this size, but weekday mornings in the Jewish Quarter still have that unhurried quality that makes Girona special.

Everything is open. This isn’t one of those shoulder-season situations where half the restaurants are still hibernating. The Cathedral, the Arab Baths, the History Museum – all running normally. Restaurant culture here is serious and consistent year-round.

Is it worth visiting in April? Absolutely yes, particularly if you dislike heat and hate fighting for space. Photographers will love the soft spring light when it appears. It suits independent travellers, couples, and anyone who’d rather walk medieval streets than lie on a beach.

**Practical tip:** Buy your Cathedral tickets online before you arrive. The queue to buy in person moves slowly and the ticket desk has limited hours, which is an annoying way to waste thirty minutes of good weather.
